Many youths suffer from some form of eco-anxiety, i.e. worry over climate change. They understand sustainability in theory but may lack exposure to its practical applications and the complex realities faced by local communities, NGOs, and smallholders. In urbanised Singapore, the disconnect between the classroom and different natural environments can be especially wide.
PM.Haze, an NGO started in 2014 by Singaporeans who wanted a solution to the transboundary haze caused by fires in Malaysia and Indonesia, runs a Regional Expedition to Experience Peatlands (RE.Peat) for youths from ASEAN to explore the interconnections between climate change, haze pollution, and sustainable agriculture.
The 2026 edition of RE.Peat offers disadvantaged but environmentally passionate students from Singapore the chance to build their environmental literacy and leadership. This will be achieved through informational training sessions, exchanges with the community and visits to the established peatlands conservation site to support the planting, revegetation and rewetting activities on the ground.
Key outputs and outcomes include:
20 young adult participants (80% of whom report improved understanding of environmental themes and increased confidence in being a part of the solution);
200 secondary general public reached through participants' post-expedition outreach projects; and
40 native trees planted and/or 3,000 saplings maintained.
