Marine Ecosystems


Marine ecosystems play a crucial role in sustaining life on Earth. They support global biodiversity, help regulate the climate, contribute to food production, and offer natural protection against storms and coastal erosion—particularly through coastal systems like mangroves, seagrass meadows and coral reefs.


These blue carbon ecosystems are also remarkably efficient carbon sinks, capable of capturing atmospheric carbon dioxide up to 10 times that of terrestrial forests and storing it for up to thousands of years.


However, marine ecosystems are increasingly threatened by pollution, overfishing, unsustainable coastal development and the impacts of climate change such as rising sea temperatures and ocean acidification. Their degradation weakens climate resilience, undermines food security and endangers the livelihoods of millions who depend on marine resources for income, nutrition and cultural identity.

Peatlands

Peatlands are important ecosystems containing carbon-rich soil, where partially decomposed plants build up over time in wet environments. Over centuries, this unique system locks in large amounts of carbon, with tropical peatlands alone storing nearly 16 billion tonnes.


However, peatlands are under severe threat, particularly in Southeast Asia, where they are being converted for agricultural purposes like oil palm cultivation. This process often involves draining the land, which disrupts natural hydrology, leads to soil subsidence and makes the peatlands more prone to fires.


These fires, often ignited by human activities or worsened by El Niño events, can smolder for months, releasing large quantities of greenhouse gases and smoke particles. The resulting haze impacts air quality, endangers public health and causes significant economic losses across the region.

Tropical Rainforests

Tropical rainforests are among the richest and most complex ecosystems on Earth. Despite covering only about 6% of the planet's land area, they are home to half of the world's plant and animal species. They also play a crucial role in combating climate change by absorbing and storing large amounts of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.


However, tropical rainforests are under severe threat from deforestation, driven by logging, agriculture expansion and infrastructural development. This loss accelerates climate change and the disrupted ecosystems suffer from significant biodiversity loss.


The destruction of the rainforests also jeopardises the livelihoods and cultural heritage of indigenous peoples who depend on the forests for sustenance, shelter and spiritual practices.

Wildlife

Wildlife conservation extends far beyond protecting individual plants or animals. The diverse flora and fauna on our planet are crucial for human survival, providing us with food, medicines, materials and even emotional and mental wellbeing. We also rely on the natural systems sustained by this intricate web of life to deliver clean air, fresh water, fertile soils and a stable climate.


Southeast Asia is home to remarkable biodiversity, hosting four global biodiversity hotspots that account for approximately 20% of the world's flora and fauna.


However, the region faces some of the highest rates of habitat loss globally, driven by the expansion of plantations, logging and urbanisation. Illegal wildlife trade, invasive species and climate change further exacerbate habitat loss and fragmentation.


With growing global demand for food, biofuels and other resources, Southeast Asia is projected to experience ongoing habitat destruction throughout the 21st century if current development practices persist, threatening its unique species and ecosystems.


That is why PPCF is committed to supporting research and initiatives that directly safeguard the survival of threatened species in the region. We also work to raise public awareness and encourage participation in reshaping our consumption and development, so as to alleviate the ecological strain.

Green Supply Chain

A green supply chain is essential for effective conservation, as it alleviates the environmental pressures arising from human consumption and development.


Logistics in many industries today often lead to deforestation, habitat destruction and the depletion of natural resources, compounding the climatological challenges faced by ecosystems.


By adopting sustainable practices throughout the supply chain, businesses can minimise their environmental impact and reduce their carbon footprint. This can be achieved through myriad ways, ranging from responsible resource management to the support of local communities.


Without a fundamental shift in consumption and development patterns, conservation efforts may only shift the burden of environmental degradation from one area to another, rather than providing long-term solutions with actual impact.
