Studies have shown that Singaporeans have low exposure to wildlife, leading to a lower affinity for nature and potentially greater human-wildlife conflict.
The Every Singaporean a Naturalist programme seeks to cultivate a habit of experiencing, understanding and appreciating nature and wildlife amongst younger Singaporeans.
Nature Society Singapore identifies schools with a proximity to a suitable natural environment. They then train the teachers and students in that school on urban biodiversity monitoring.
During the year, teachers lead students to conduct biodiversity monitoring around their school, providing regular exposure to a natural environment and contributing to the global wildlife database iNaturalist. An annual Biodiversity Race brings all these teachers and students together, giving them a chance to put their skills to the test.
Key outputs and outcomes include:
150 student participants in Biodiversity Race; and
500 research-grade observations uploaded to iNaturalist.
